SPECIALIST TEAM
Led by Robin Haussmann, the Macadamia Nursery Guru. Our team of specialists is dedicated to delivering excellence.
SUPERIOR NURSERY
TREES
The cutting and seed material used for making our high quality trees is taken only from our own Gold Standard orchards.
OPTIMAL
TECHNOLOGY
We control the controllable, from tunnel humidity through to fertigation EC and pH, providing for optimal growing conditions and the highest quality trees.
MACADAMIA TREES
PRODUCED ANNUALLY
We produce over 400 000 trees a year of all the major cultivars, which are subject to the highest possible production standards.
Our Nursery
Nursery trees sourced from our Gold Standard macadamia orchards are available for you to purchase
The best possible starting position for you to obtain a high-yielding macadamia orchard is to start with trees that are sourced from a high-yielding macadamia orchard.
Kubu Nursery stock is only produced from our best-performing macadamia orchards, with annual yields of more than 6 tons D.I.S.
These Gold Standard orchards consistently deliver macadamia nut yields which are more than 2.5 times the national average and can reach maturity approximately one year earlier than the industry standard.
Back in 2015, we started the nursery for producing our own trees. After seeing some issues in our orchards, such as the wrong cultivars compared to what we ordered, we determined that we must start our own nursery to provide us with critical assurance of guaranteed quality and full traceability. Following its success and the strong market demand for trees, we commercialised the nursery in 2020.
Our Nursery Trees
Currently, we produce over 400,000 trees a year at the highest possible quality, using the latest technology for monitoring and controlling all that we can, including temperature, humidity, and fertigation.
This would mean nothing without our dedicated team of nursery specialists led by Robin Haussmann, the macadamia nursery “guru”, and further supported by Lindi Grobler, one of South Africa’s leading nursery agronomists.
To help ensure our customers ensure their new trees receive the optimal support from the point they leave us, we provide complementary advice so that they can.
“Purchasing trees from our nursery for your orchards carries with it our signature assurance of the highest quality. Properly managed, these trees can provide you with the same Gold Standard yields, helping you to maximise the return on your long-term investment in macadamia nut production”
Our Nursery Beaumont trees
We clone only from our best, carefully selected trees from our own Beaumont orchards. We know this provides the best possible start in life for our nursery trees, because our macadamia orchards consistently produce over 6 tons/ha DIS and the national average is only 2.3 tons/ha. This level of production has even been maintained during the recent years of drought, which severely impacted our water supply.
The Beaumont is the most popular macadamia tree planted in South Africa, with more than 60% of all new orchards planted being Beaumont. It is generally considered to be a good choice for hotter climates, where other cultivars can struggle. It produces a medium to large nut, with a uniformly round and smooth shell. This results in high demand for the global in-shell macadamia market as well as the kernel market. Producing a product that is in demand for both markets, helps ensure you earn a good price for your crop.
We suppply all major cultivars
The Beaumont may not be suitable for your location or you may want to plant more than one cultivar to obtain a cross-pollination benefit in your orchard. We graft any cultivar you require on to seedling root stock, using Beaumont or Nelmac 2 seeds produced from our own Gold Standard orchard crop. We can advise on cultivars that are appropriate to the particular climate in your location, based on the latest industry experience. Examples include:
A4
a relatively new variety, typically produces above average nut sizes, and the potential volume of crop per ha looks very promising.
816
a high producer, of a medium to large nut. Requires greater vigilance for pest control and suffers in windier locations from a relatively shallower root system.
814
nut tends to be a little smaller in size, but can be a high producer if well maintained.
Nelmac 2
produces a good, average size nut. Can produce well in years when other varieties struggle.
Our Team of
Experts
We are new as a commercial nursery, but we’ve been making macadamia trees for ourselves for more than 5 years.
A successful nursery requires skill, experience and diligence, and we have the best people in the business, led on an ongoing basis by Robin Haussmann, who is considered a leading expert in the macadamia tree nursery industry and further supported by Lindi Grobler, the renowned nursery agronomist.
Planting a macadamia tree orchard is a long-term investment. Should you require support, we are able to offer you advice on all aspects of macadamia orchard establishment, care and production. This is a complementary service that we offer to purchasers of our nursery trees.
The best possible
nursery facilities
In addition to the diligence of our amazing team, we use the latest Netafim computer system and automation, backed up with an uninterrupted power supply, to ensure that we stay in control of every possible aspect that can be controlled. From the temperature and humidity in our rooting tunnels, through to the precise EC and pH of the fertigation applied in our shade net houses, we leave nothing to chance.
Since we started farming macadamias in 2007, we understand how critically important it is to always ensure that the controllable is always controlled. To ensure you earn the highest return from your macadamia orchards, we will not compromise on selling you only the healthiest and strongest macadamia trees.
Kubu Group is a certified member of the Seedling Growers Association of South Africa ensuring that our macadamia nursery trees are produced to a minimum standard and importantly, in ways that minimise detrimental environmental practices, reduce excessive use of chemical products and ensure the safety, health and welfare of our workers.
We are members as both a crop producer and as a macadamia tree nursery. We do not have to be a member to sell macadamia trees, but we believe the macadamia industry in South Africa only has a long-term future if we remain vigilant on quality and SAMAC provides the best foundation for ensuring this.
